CBN: The Lights Out Cannabinoid
By this point, most people that use hemp and its derivatives know that there are hundreds of cannabinoids found in the plant’s flower buds, with the vast majority of our existing research only scratching the surface of about a dozen of them. As the industry gains momentum and opportunities to expand its knowledge, the market becomes increasingly exposed to these compounds for personal use. It’s a beautiful thing!
Today we’re going to be looking at a cannabinoid with a lot of potential: CBN. We’ll be working more with it in the coming months as we improve our technologies and techniques, but we wanted to tease it with some useful information.
The Cannabinoid
So far we’ve worked with Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 8), Cannabigerol (CBG) and the first cannabinoid to gain national attention, Cannabidiol (CBD). Like these compounds, Cannabinol (CBN) is a naturally occurring substance found in hemp. As these other cannabinoids lose their stability over time, they naturally break down into cannabinol. If you’ve ever accidentally smoked an old hemp nug, chances are you inhaled more CBN than any of its relatives.
CBN’s Functions
Much like the various forms of THC, CBN binds to our endocannabinoid system’s CB1 receptors. This allows the cannabinoid to produce more immediate and noticeable effects, along with CBG and THC, than the use of CBD can offer.
CBN is largely considered to be non-psychoactive at this time. However, some experts believe that it should be reconsidered as psychoactive. This is mainly due to the more sedative and euphoric nature of this compound compared to the other cannabinoids derived from hemp.
CBN’s Effects
Like the others, the body of research into CBN is still in its infantile stages. Keep in mind that hemp and its derivatives became federally legal a mere three years ago. However, we’re starting to catch a glimpse into CBN’s potential as another cannabinoid available for sale online and in stores on a national scale.
As mentioned previously, CBN seems to be more sedative than CBD, CBG and Delta 8. It also seems to share a more direct impact on our bodies’ perceptions of pain and responses to inflammation and convulsions with CBG. And as is the case with every other cannabinoid we use in our products, CBN shows early promise in being used for antibiotic, antipsychotic and anxiety management purposes.
Just as THC has earned a reputation as an appetite stimulant, CBD and CBG have been making waves as appetite suppressants. This leaves a large number of our neighbors hoping for assistance with appetite stimulation from hemp derived cannabinoids in the dark, as THC remains largely illegal across the country and Delta 8 can’t be purchased in several states. Fortunately, the close similarity in effects shared by THC and CBN promises some relief for that population with the use of the latter.
No Need To Count Sheep
When taken into consideration together, CBN’s effects contribute to a commonly-held notion: that CBN is the hemp derived cannabinoid of choice for folks who need to start getting more hours of quality sleep. End users who have already had the chance to try this compound have widely reported increases in the duration and improvement in the quality of their nightly rest.
We’re incredibly excited to give you the opportunity to experience Silver Owl CBN later this year!
